Many college basketball teams recruit players labeled "projects": tall, athletic, often foreign-born players who came late to the game and who may struggle to catch up with Americans who have played it all their lives. They don't always pan out as players but can sometimes parlay size and athleticism into a free college education. Elevate shows their side of the story. The SEEDS Academy in Dakar, Senegal, selects 25 players a year to train in basketball and academics, with the goal of placing them in American prep schools, leading to the possibility of a college scholarship. The culture shock is formidable for these seven-foot-tall French-speaking Muslims, who find themselves in rural Connecticut or a wealthy Chicago suburb. They confront language barriers, strange food, unimaginable weather, and more, along with the usual teen traumas. We come to admire the courage of the four players showcased here through varying degrees of success.
VERDICT A solid documentary, suitable for all libraries.
