This first in a new trilogy from writing duo Wild (“Hacker” series) and Payne (“Secrets of Stone” series, with Victoria Blue) is rooted in Greek mythology, but takes some fun liberties. Classics professor Maximus Kane knows he’s been different since a tragic accident in his youth took the life of his best friend. Ever since he’s kept his distance from the outside world. Inexplicably drawn to student Kara Valari, he begins to realize that Kara has some secrets of her own. Kara has grown up in the spotlight. She’s used to being trailed by the paparazzi and the weight of familial (mostly her mother’s) expectations, but she simply wants to earn her degree on her own merit before she’s forced into a relationship that benefits the Valari clan.
VERDICT With strong pacing, excellent chemistry between the leads, and a suspenseful cliff-hanger ending, Wild and Payne prove more than up to the daunting task of setting up a compelling story that will sustain over multiple books. This superb paranormal romance is sure to leave genre fans and admirers of the authors wanting more.
