In a year as difficult as 2020, it may be hard to imagine being grateful for anything. However, the timing is perfect for this guide to gratitude, the result of years of research [by Smith & Co. or who are the editors? do we need to include?] at the University of California, Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center. The book is divided into six parts, which progressively introduce the benefits of gratitude, starting with the meaning of gratitude and ending with the transformational potential when it is applied to society and helping others. Each section is comprised of several minichapters three to 10 pages in length, allowing readers to digest as much as they like in one sitting. Chapters explore themes covering gratitude as it relates to self, relationships, family, work, education, race, religion, gender, politics, health care, and more. Several examples expressing thankfulness are provided. Notable contributors include Arianna Huffington and W. Kamau Bell, in addition to dozens of practitioners and professors from across the United States.
VERDICT Readers looking for more than a fluffy, feel-good gratitude journal will enjoy this research-based affirmation of the necessity for gratitude in all areas of life.
